For three years at Legend Video, Wood was a workhorse, shooting six series, three releases a month. Here’s what he cranked out: 16 volumes of Try A Teen (co-directed with Brandon Iron), ten volumes of Teens Goin’ Wild, 17 volumes of All About Ass, 11 Bangin’ in the Hoods, 10 Foot Traffics, seven volumes each of Rapid Fire and Interracial Nation and two of Fresh and Pure (a brief re-titling of the teen series). He was the main male talent in all of those four to five-scene videos, except for Interracial, which had all black men. He wants to do “as much as Jeff will let me do. WOOD: It was the chance to own, that's the only reason I left. Jeff wanted me to come over there and own a title. I felt like I was spinning my wheels at Legend. I'd been there a long time. I was doing six lines, three movies a month, just cranking them out. And still working as talent in other people's movies. At the end of the day, granted, yeah, we're making money, but Legend's product doesn't get a lot of play, as far as PR; they're kind of low-key. I felt like next year I'd be in the same boat, like the Rodney Dangerfield of porn. I feel sometimes like I'm Rodney. I work a lot and I don't think I get that much press. At the end of the day it doesn't matter, I guess, but you kinda want a little bit...just for the work you put in. That would be nice. AVN: The JM deal is strictly for distribution, right? WOOD: We actually own our titles. Jeff distributes them. We own all the rights. He gets a percentage. We did the first one, Flesh Fest, through Elite Multimedia. I didn't know if that was the right place. At the same time JM was separating from Legend. I actually shopped [the LeWood product] to some other people. I wanted an ongoing thing, and Jeff said, "Why don't you guys come over here, and you can own it." I liked that. I guess ownership means different things at different companies, but Jeff's really been good to us. He goes into the warehouse and counts the pieces, and what's gone is considered sold. He pays us, we don't have to wait months and months. AVN: What all were you shooting for Legend? WOOD: Teens Goin' Wild, which used to be Try A Teen, I did 16 of those. Teens Goin' Wild, we did seven, and they were worried about some legal issues with "teen" and all this stuff goin' on, and they wanted something different, so we just edited it in there. I just thought at the last minute: Fresh and Pure. We did two of those and then it was back to Teens Goin' Wild. All About Ass, I did 16 of those. Ten Bangin in the Hoods, ten Foot Traffics, seven Rapid Fires and seven Interracial Nations. AVN: And in most of those you were the main dick, right? WOOD: Right, except for Interracial Nation. That was black guys and white girls. I shot it but I wasn't in it. AVN: Just how often were you working as talent? WOOD: There were five to six scenes a week that I was actually in. [Brian] Surewood started there. I saw a lot of people. You would drive out there [to Monrovia] for 75 bucks for a scene and you were happy to get it, to get the experience, to get your foot in the door. He used to shoot right there at his office. And then I did the gang bangs, all the weird stuff. AVN: When did you really feel you were established? WOOD: I still don't feel like I'm established. Pretty much last year. Me and Brandon Iron went our separate ways [they were partners in IronWood Productions] and I feel like the last year or two, we kind of got our own identity. Brandon probably had it more than me at the time. We did everything equal, but he was the more vocal of the two of us, as far as promotion. He likes to stir it up. I was more just doing my job. Every day we were working on something and it got to the point where we thought we should do it differently. He's more spur of the moment. One in the morning..."Hey, I've got a girl right now, can you come and shoot?" I like to plan it a little more. At the time we had the Legend deal and we were also shooting his West Coast [movies]. And he wanted to take the West Coast deal, and I took the Legend and pretty much kept going. Now he's at Platinum X. AVN: How did you meet your wife? WOOD: I met Francesca at Extreme [Associates], of all places. I was working there as talent all the time, and she was doing sales and their bondage stuff. I remember when they hired her, I didn't know who she was... I had heard the name before, as a fan but it never registered that that was her. We developed a friendship. We had kind of a short courtship. We only dated for three to six months. We got married almost three years ago, May 4, 2001. AVN: You seem to have a good partnership. WOOD: She's my right hand man. She just helps so much. I don't think I could have done all those [Legend] lines without her. It's corny but it's true. I would have gone crazy. It's too much to do, booking and performing, doing stuff for other people. She handles all that. I just tell her what I'm shooting, kind of the girls that I want, she gets them and that's it. She makes the calls, books the talent, books the location, books the cameraman. I just have to show up. For LeWood and NXT LeVL, she produces all that, too. She's a good partner. I just show up and either shoot camera or perform. AVN: Do you have any role models in the business? WOOD: T.T. Boy. I don't know him too well but we bump into each other all the time. He works with Claudio who edits a lot of our stuff and shoots for me all the time. I see that as the ultimate path. That guy's a workhorse, and HE owns all those movies. He does like five or six movies a month by himself. He performs in a lot of them. He does a lot of interracial. He's just a one-man operation. I think that's the path. He's been doing it a lot longer. He was probably one of the first people to own his product. That is like The Mentor, as far as owning your product. And he's a great performer. I've seen him in movies but I've never seen him perform live. Cuz he only works for himself. AVN: How do you rate yourself as a performer? WOOD: I try. I think I'm one of the more consistent guys. Not one of the classic pretty boy guys, but I do my job and I'm into what I'm doing. I think I have a good rep in the business. I've pretty much worked for the best, especially the gonzo companies: Evil Angel, Jules Jordan, worked for Anabolic, Metro, Pleasure. I've been in every Skeeter [Kerkove] movie just about. AVN: You've done a lot of anal... WOOD: I like anal. It's always been a taboo fantasy. I like to do it on the girl. Besides, I just don't know where else you can go, the business is so anal-oriented right now. I'm a butt guy. I like big butts. I've always liked anal since I was a fan. I rented anal. At the time, though, hardly anybody did it. There were like four or five girls...actually, Francesca was one of them. Now it's like you almost have to do it, for a girl. It's tougher on the girl. AVN: How old are you? WOOD: I'm 35. I started late. I was like 29. I went to UNLV [University of Nevada, Las Vegas]. I went to junior college first, here in California, on a tennis scholarship. Then I moved back to Las Vegas, finished school there and was just working in casinos and stuff. Did some odd jobs, did every casino job you can do, and I just said I had to get out of Vegas. I didn't feel I was getting anywhere. There a degree isn't as important as it is in other cities, it's more of a service industry. AVN: What led you to Porn Valley? WOOD: I applied to several graduate schools, but I got into Loyola, here in L. A. I figured, I'm here, and I always wanted to try it [working in adult]. It was in my second year of graduate school that I started doing porn. The first time was an internet site, a swinger couple...I think they're still in business...the wife sells her own movies on line. I found it on the web, just searching. They had me come over, they were down in the South Bay, did a scene with her for one of her movies, everything went good, here's a couple other numbers you can try for more video work. I just started going from word of mouth, going up the ladder, eventually I landed in [Jim] South's office. Met somebody at a party, she took me into South's [World Modeling]. The first scenes through South were for the Shut Up and Blow Me series, for All Good. AVN: Did South get you work? WOOD: Jim, honestly, no. I rode him about that later ‘cause I've seen, since I've been in there...I go in there to book talent...some of these new guys come in, and it took me forever to get in the door there. He's calling them, getting them work. I don't think he did that for me. He told me, "You definitely did it on your own." I liked that he knew that. AVN: At what point did you feel you'd arrived as talent? WOOD: I didn't feel like I was really part of the talent pool that first year or so because I wasn't seen that much. I was in a lot of the BJ movies, and people just see you from the waist down. When I started working for Extreme...Luciano [Michael Stefano] pulled me in there...that's when I started working with a lot of better people, male talent, when Extreme was really strong and they had all the good people there. That's when I felt I was part of the talent pool. And the last couple years, the XRCO gave me the Unsung Swordsman nomination. And last year I got the Performer of the Year nomination from AVN. I felt like, finally, that was nice! And the first movie I ever got nominated by AVN was the Foot Traffic [two years in a row], so that's when I started feeling okay. I don't toot my own horn, and I should, a little bit. It's good for business. But I want to get a little more. I do a lot, more than probably a lot of people would imagine. AVN: Did you get into this more for money or pleasure? WOOD: Originally more for pleasure. I enjoy what I do. Now that I'm married it's a little different. I enjoy what I'm doing while I'm doing it, but there's a certain limit that I try to save for home. I don't do it for money. There's a lot of less hassle jobs for money. People say, "Oh, you've got the greatest job in the world," but they don't know all the STDs and all the other trauma that goes along with it. AVN: Have you had any health issues yourself? WOOD: I've been pretty lucky. I'm the type that if I even think something's wrong I go to the doctor. I know when my body doesn't feel right. But it is an issue because at home I don't have sex without a condom now. It's not fair to her, because she's not exposed to it like I am. If she does do a scene, she does like one a month. I'm working every day. Although it's gotten a lot better. I think when they went to the full panels [STD testing], that was good. I think they caught a lot of people coming into the business with [STDs]. A lot of new girls might not have known they had [anything]. The guys in the business, this pretty much is their sex life, unless they're already married. Not too many are dating outside the industry, so they're less likely to bring it in from the outside. You got a lot of European girls, you got girls coming in from all over the world now. And people traveling to these places. AVN: What happened with your graduate studies? WOOD: I finished graduate school. I got an MBA in Finance. That was tough, but I got through it. I'm glad I did it. That's the most studying I ever did in my life. I felt like I always coasted. Undergrad I just felt I was having a good time, I didn't focus on school. But I really studied hard when I was doing the business here. And the day I graduated from graduate school I did a photo shoot the same day. There was the ceremony and then I drove to a photo shoot right after. That felt kind of weird. AVN: Do you still play tennis? WOOD: Basketball, mostly. Trying to stay in shape. AVN: Do you and Francesca have any time off? WOOD: No. I think we do too much sometimes. We just feel like we gotta do it now ‘cause you don't know how it's going to change. We'd rather hustle now and see what happens later. AVN: What more would you like to do, content-wise? WOOD: I just like that orgy stuff that T.T. shoots. I'd like to shoot that myself. You see all these people... that to me is decadence. Rocco did it a lot. In the U.S. it's not cost-effective, but T.T. goes down there [Brazil] and shoots six girls, six guys, it's crazy. I like that stuff. AVN: What else do you like, as a fan? WOOD: I like Seymore Butts. I've never worked for him or met him. But I would. When you first get started you call around to get work, but after a while you kind of settle into where you're working. You're in with who you're in with. If you're a gonzo guy... He does gonzo. I never worked for him but I was always a fan. I always rented his stuff. That was some of the first gonzo I'd ever seen. It looked real, like people just came over to his house. Obviously I know now it's different. But I had that fan fantasy. AVN: When did you watch your first porno? WOOD: My first porn I saw probably too young. Probably 12. You know, your friend finds something in his dad's closet kind of thing. The first one I saw was Seka, Swedish Erotica, and then my dad had a little collection, two or three porns that I watched till probably the tape wore out, Barbara Broadcast, which I love to this day, and The Opening of Misty Beethoven. God, I loved that. Annette Haven was awesome. AVN: How much more product do you want to turn out as a producer? WOOD:
